FIRST EDITION THUS. 2 vols. Large 4to. (28.75 x 23 cm.) pp.[iv]+xlix+646; [iv]+532+196. Contemporary binding by H. Walther* of full straight grained red morocco, sides with single gilt fillet borderspine with raised bands, gilt rules and decorative bands, gilt titles direct and imprint at foot, gilt decorated board edges and inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Portrait frontispiece of the dedicatee William Murray, Lord Mansfield engraved by J. Jones after W. Grimaldi. Fronts and adjacent dedication leaf foxed, overall contents clean and fresh, a few minor scuff to the binding, a fine example. Henry Walther (fl. c. 1775 1815) was a prominent German-born bookbinder who established a reputation for high-quality work in London during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He was part of a distinguished group of émigré binders, often cited alongside contemporaries like Kalthoeber and Hering, who elevated London bookbinding during this period.
