First edition, first impression, first issue, in unusually bright condition. A social novel exploring class, gender, sexuality, and nationality in early 20th-century Britain, it is considered one of the author's best works and "the one which firmly established his reputation among his contemporaries as an important writer" (Lodge, p. ix). Howards End is known especially for its epigraph "Only connect", a motif that can be traced throughout the story. "The novel is built upon many antagonisms, it contrasts traditional values and modern developments. Forster describes different characters, lifestyles, and values in order to show what he considered as important, the connection of past and present, but also on the personal level, the connection of people, even if from different classes. The aim was to convey the reader the necessity of connection, the need to connect what has become disconnected, in order to attain an integral life" (Schüller, p. 2). The book was made into an Academy Award-winning film in 1992, starring Emma Thompson and Anthony Hopkins. The first issue was bound with four integral pages of publisher's adverts; in the second issue, an additional eight pages of advertisements were inserted. Kirkpatrick A4a.
