First editions, containing all six of Peirce's revolutionary papers in American philosophy, heralding the birth of pragmatism and together constituting his key philosophical work. In ten months, Peirce published six papers in the journal (four in vol. XII, two in vol. XIII). The first two established pragmatism, the latter two expounded ideas unique to Peirce, the fifth introduced his concept of the order of nature, and the final suggested his concept of abduction. "Although the essays gained little attention, William James made them famous in his pragmatic philosophy two decades later. The first two essays in the series, 'The Fixation of Belief' and 'How to Make Our Ideas Clear', were Peirce's most widely cited works through most of the twentieth century. James saw in the second essay the seeds of pragmatism, with its emphasis on the use and consequences of ideas" (ANB). Two vols, octavo (228 x 144). Contemporary black half sheep, spine lettered in gilt, purple pebble-grain cloth sides, brown speckled edges. Portrait frontispiece in each, further portrait of Thomas Edison in Vol. XIII, woodcut illustrations in text. A little rubbed, contents a little toned with a couple minor ink annotations. A very good set. Seller Inventory # 162059
