This is an original copy of the "Invasion at HARPER'S FERRY" U.S. Senate Report issued by the 36th Congress, 1st Session prior to the Civil War. 1860 1st edition; Government Printing Office; Washington, D.C. "The Select Committee of the Senate appointed to inquire into the late invasion and seizure of the public property at Harper's Ferry." Senator JEFFERSON DAVIS (who went on to become the first and only president of the Confederate States during the Civil War) was one of the Democrat representatives of the Committee. ROBERT E. LEE (who served as a Confederate general during the Civil War) commanded the Marines that defeated John Brown in his raid at Harper's Ferry and is included in the Report. JOHN BROWN'S raid on Harper's Ferry was an effort by abolitionist John Brown, from October 16 to 18, 1859, to initiate a slave revolt in Southern states by taking over the United States arsenal at Harper's Ferry, Virginia. It has been called the dress rehearsal for, or tragic prelude to, the Civil War. Original cloth binding with the embossed illustration of an eagle on both covers. Hardcover with 255 numbered pages. There is an "Index to Testimony" at the back. Condition: Some light soiling to the covers. There is a thin, 2" tear to the cloth at the right edge of the spine where it meets the front cover. The top and bottom edges of the spine are worn with bits of cloth missing. Cloth tears at the cover corners. The gilt lettering on the spine has partially faded. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. The pages are age-toned with occasional mild foxing. Heavier foxing on the end papers and pastedowns.
