There are a couple of tiny marks on the original red cloth, but this is a fresh and most pleasing set in dust wrappers with only a little wear to the top edges. xvi, 344; +2pp. vi, 310pp. + 2pp listing some of works by Kipling. The particular invention wherewith he has enriched this book is a sort of chorus- the comment of the private soldier upon the events narrated, which is witty and effective. Mr Kipling has also brought to bear his magic upon the most matter-of-fact of records, the battalion war diary, and has made it alive. Regarding certain matters of detail he is inaccurate, and it is perhaps to be regretted that he had not more expert assistance for this part of the task.
