First edition of Charlotte Bronte's masterpiece, in the original publisher's cloth, the first volume only. The book is bound in fine-grain plum-coloured cloth with trellis-like blind-stamped decoration to the boards and gilt spine lettering. Faded and worn along the outer hinges; an old tear across the cloth that covers the backstrip; minor loss to the cloth at the head and tail of the spine; corners bumped. Yellow coated endpapers with a small mark to the first flyleaf; half title and title page precede the main text which runs to page 304, ending at Chapter XVI. 32 pages of advertisements to the rear, dated October 1847 - the month of publication. Binder's ticket of Westley's and Clark to the lower pastedown. A little dustiness to text which is complete as issued. Jane Eyre, the story of a governess who falls in love with her employer, only to discover the terrible secret that he has lived with, made its author's reputation and has been beloved since its first publication. It was the first novel published by the Bronte sisters. This copy is a relatively affordable example of the first edition which sells for several tens of thousands of pounds when all three volumes are present.
