BOOKS SHIP THE NEXT BUSINESS DAY, WRAPPED IN PADDING, IN A BOX. From 1961-1962, W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) was commissioned by the Hitachi Corporation in Japan to document the company's activities. What resulted instead, in the form of this book, was a photo-essay on the impact of rapid industrialization on Japanese laborers and a meditation on the balances and tensions between a traditional and modern Japan. The scarcest of Smith's books, featuring many images never published elsewhere. Photographs by W. Eugene Smith; text by Smith and Carole Thomas. 79 pages; 145 gravure-printed b&w illustrations; 10.25 x 13 inches. Ref: Auer, 802 Photo Books, p.420.
