About this Item

First facsimile edition of Matisse's late masterpiece, reproducing the celebrated 1947 original. Created while the artist was confined to bed in his seventies, Jazz reproduces his vividly coloured paper cut-outs, or dessins aux ciseaux, inspired largely by circus performers and conceived as visual equivalents of jazz improvisation. This George Braziller/MoMA facsimile edition uses modern offset printing on specially manufactured paper to reproduce the appearance of the original pochoirs with remarkable fidelity. Leymarie, Read, & Lieberman, Henri Matisse, 1966, p. 28-29. Folio. With 20 full-page colour plates of which 16 are double spreads. Contents loose as issued in printed wrappers. Housed in publisher's dark blue cloth-backed solander box, spine lettered in grey, paper label to front. Wrapper creased, contents clean and bright; some marks to solander box: a very good copy in a very good slipcase.
