Ober, Fred A. The Knockabout Club in North Africa. Boston: Estes and Lauriat, [1890]. First edition. Octavo, pp. [i-vii] viii [ix-xi] 12-240. Original pictorial red cloth, front and spine panels stamped in silver, pictorial endpapers. Illustrated with 79 etchings, some full-page. Former owner's name neatly written at top of title page. A brilliant copy of a beautifully designed book, and quite scarce as such. #1012. $100. This hybrid of juvenile adventure and serious non-fiction travel literature was the third in a series of such ventures by Ober. The style alternates between action narration and social-studies description, with intercalated accounts by other writers. Probably of more interest now for its superb illustrations.
