8vo in fours, pp. xiv, 103; no half title; in old wrappers. First edition. First performed at Drury Lane in December 1804. The first night seems to have been something of a disaster - the audience perceived the character of Sir Rowland as 'a satire on the modern stock of English gentry', and the sacrifice of plot to dialogue seems to have left them cold, so the first night became also the last night. Holt, who later became a successful lawyer, pleads for more careful reading, and in part he seems to have been successful, as there were further editions of the play, though no more performances. The epilogue was written by the author, 'for Mrs Jordan', who was not among the cast but who was a regular performer at Drury Lane.
