(no dust jacket) [a good sound copy, unfortunately blemished by a large dampstain at the lower left corner of the front cover and extending a bit into the spine; the red cloth covers also show some light soiling, the spine is a little turned and the spine cloth a little faded, but none of this has affected the book's interior at all]. (B&W photographs, endpaper maps) An account of the author's Big Adventure: bringing the first live giant panda from China to the United States. Mrs. Harkness was a fashion designer and socialite, and her husband Bill was the explorer -- until he died, of throat cancer, in Shanghai in 1936. She then took up his panda quest, and with the help of a young Chinese-American guide made her way to a bamboo forest in a remote mountainous region of southern China, where she captured a panda cub. She named it Su Lin, and cared for it much like it was a human baby on the long journey back to the U.S. The panda was a press sensation, and after living in Mrs. Harkness's New York apartment for a few months, she sold it to Chicago's Brookfield Zoo, where it became a star attraction. Her book was a success, and although when it was published in 1938 she had already made a second expedition to China and brought back a companion for Su Lin, those events are not discussed in this volume. (And, alas, not long after she had returned with the second panda, Su Lin himself died of pneumonia; he's now stuffed and on display at the Field Museum in Chicago.) Welcome to ReadInk (rhymes with "Dead Ink"), now in our 29th year of putting interesting books into the hands of interested people. **** Although I occasionally lapse into the "royal we" voice, ReadInk is just me, from one end of the pipeline to the other: buying, cataloging, customer service, shipping, you name it. Nothing here is automated, and every order or inquiry gets my prompt, personal attention. **** In describing a book's physical condition, I employ standard book-grading terminology (Good/Very Good/Fine, with various in-between gradations as appropriate) and do my best to avoid both excessive jargon and overly-finicky detail. My goal is always to present a faithful impression of a book's condition and appearance; significant flaws are individually noted, or if too numerous are succinctly summarized. **** Books are more than just physical objects, however: they are also intellectual/information vessels, and in almost every case I also include some information about a book's content in my listing, even if it's only a carefully chosen quotation from the dust jacket copy. (This may sound like a small thing, but take a look sometime and you'll see how amazingly few sellers bother with this, especially in the case of older fiction, which is one of my specialties.) **** I take great care (and pride) in my packaging of books for shipment; I figure it's my responsibility to ensure that each book I send out will withstand the rigors of the U.S. Postal System, and will reach its new owner in the same condition as advertised. We grade our books conservatively (Fine being our highest grade, used only for books with no discernible flaws) and package them liberally: most hardcover books are sent in boxes, securely wrapped and cushioned, and with the dust jacket (if present) protected by a new mylar cover. We provide a concise, accurate description of the condition of every book (and a scanned image of the actual book on offer); please get in touch by email if you need additional information. All books are returnable for a full refund if not A-OK.
Shipping terms
We offer free Media Mail shipping for all domestic (U.S.) orders, and endeavor to keep our Priority Mail rates as reasonable as possible. International shipping in most instances will be via USPS First Class International mail, at the posted rates. Only on rare occasions do we request additional shipping charges, when warranted by the weight or value of the book.
