First edition of this installment in the storied journal founded by Sowerby (1885-1954) the naturalist and explorer. Of particular interest in this installment is the first published announcement of Ruth Harkness' (d. 1947) as the first person to bring a living Giant Panda out of China, a female named Su Lin. Her husband, William Harkness, zoologist and adventurer, had headed an expedition to capture Giant Pandas, but died before he even entered the habitat. Ruth traveled into Wenchuang County of Sichuan Province, then onto Baoxing County where she discovered the cub less then 2 kilometers from Jiajin Mountain, and was later donated to the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago.…

(no dust jacket) [a good sound copy, unfortunately blemished by a large dampstain at the lower left corner of the front cover and extending a bit into the spine; the red cloth covers also show some light soiling, the spine is a little turned and the spine cloth a little faded, but none of this has affected the book's interior at all]. (B&W photographs, endpaper maps) An account of the author's Big Adventure: bringing the first live giant panda from China to the United States. Mrs. Harkness was a fashion designer and socialite, and her husband Bill was the explorer -- until he died, of throat cancer, in Shanghai in 1936. She then took up his panda quest, and with the help of a young Chinese-American guide made her way to a bamboo forest in a remote mountainous region of southern China, where she captured a panda cub. She named it Su Lin, and cared for it much like it was a human baby on the long journey back to the U.S. The panda was a press sensation, and after living in Mrs. Harkness's New York apartment for a few months, she sold it to Chicago's Brookfield Zoo, where it became a star attraction. Her book was a success, and although when it was published in 1938 she had already made a second expedition to China and brought back a companion for Su Lin, those events are not discussed in this volume. (And, alas, not long after she had returned with the second panda, Su Lin himself died of pneumonia; he's now stuffed and on display at the Field Museum in Chicago.) The story of Mrs. Harkness's various adventures is told more fully in a 2005 book by Vicki Croke, also entitled "The Lady and the Panda.".…
