First British edition. Demy 8vo; xlii,(406),[2]pp. Green cloth with gilt title on spine, gilt centrepiece on upper board; general wear and soiling. Binding square and tight. Top edge gilt. Foxing to other edges but clean within. B/w plates and figures. A 'Very Good' copy. Frederico José de Santa-Anna Nery, 1848-1901, was a Brazilian historian. He sought to promote Brazilian culture to the world and took a particular interest in the indigenous cultures of the Amazon. The heraldic centrepiece on the upper board is interesting for its motto 'Neri sol di fuori' ? approximately, 'black only on the outside'.
