Cloth, gilt cover decoration, top edge red, 8vo, 21 cm, xxiv, 456 pp, plates, ills. From the preface: "The first and some subsequent editions of the Diary of Samuel Pepys contained a selection from the letters he wrote and received. A further selection appeared in J. Smith s Life, Journals, and Correspondence of Samuel Pepys in 1841. But Wheatley in 1893 omitted the letters, intending to produce a new collection, and it was not till 1926, when the late Dr. J. R. Tanner began to print the Pepys Cockerell Papers in extenso, that attention was again fully directed to the value of such material. A comprehensive selection from Pepys s correspondence, embracing the work of Braybrooke, Smith, and Tunner, and including uncollected or unprinted letters from other sources, thus becomes a real necessity. The opportunity, too, was there, to remove the letters from their position as a mere appendix to the Diary and treat them more largely and independently, as illustrative of Pepys s life and development, especially through periods not covered by the Diary. The Second Diary, which here follows the letters, has not been reprinted since its first publication in 1841. The emphasis in this selection is naturally on the side of Pepys s private interests, and not of his official transactions. Of particular value is the exchange of letters between Pepys and Evelyn, fellow-virtuosi and fellow-diarists. For the first time these letters have been collected, as fully as Evelyn s discursiveness would permit. In like manner the correspondence with Dr. Arthur Charlett, so illuminating for Pepys s last years, has been brought together. On the other hand, less attention is here paid to the long discussion of the second sight, and to the travels of John Jackson, which the seeker may find in full in Dr. Tanner s volumes ." Some foxing to prelims and edges, otherwise Good. Seller Inventory # ABE-62219
