First edition, from the library of Clive Richards, although unmarked as such. Richards owned "the finest collection of Nelson letters in private hands" according to The Telegraph. He served as vice president of the Nelson Society and was a member of the 1805 Club for 30 years. This biography contains many engraved plates of famous scenes from Nelson's life and battles, including of his death at Trafalgar. It also describes Nelson's funeral in meticulous detail. Engraved portrait frontispiece, half-title, and 11 plates (4 folding, 1 of a facsimile), vignette on title page, tables, diagrams, and facsimile signatures in text. 20th-century half calf, red calf spine label, raised bands ruled in gilt, marbled boards and endpapers. Spine and head of boards slightly sunned, gutter cracked at half-title but holding, foxing and toning especially opposite plates, marginal loss to p. 228, folding plate repaired on verso with Japanese tissue: a very good copy.
