FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. xiii, [i], 577, [3, ads] + frontispiece, 2 other engraved portraits, 4 mounted photographic plates, and one folding map. Original red pebble-grain cloth, ruled in black, spine lettered in gilt, black endpapers. Occasional foxing, particularly to plate mounts, one gathering partly sprung. Extremities a little rubbed and bumped, a few spots to spine. Booklabel of R.D.W. Forrest to pastedown, his ownership inscription (1878) and a later one to half-title. An important biography of the pioneering Scottish glaciologist (1809-1868). The issue (presumably earlier) without the index.
