Condition: About Fine. *** The remarkable story of Betty Mouat (1825-1918), a Shetlander who was the sole passenger on a fishing boat, the "Columbine", from Grutness to Lerwick (two ports on the main Shetland island) where she intended to visit her sister and sell her knitting. Bad weather overtook them, and the skipper was lost overboard. The remaining two crewmen launched a rescue craft but failed to find the captain - and were unable to return to the Columbine. Betty drifted in the boat for nine days with little provisions, until she was rescued off the coast of Norway by fishermen. Her voyage was much celebrated, and Queen Victoria sent her a letter and a cheque for twenty pounds. Included in this book are contemporary images of Betty, her rescuers, and some of the the places she visited.
