Publisher's RARE BLACK cloth-effect paper over boards with silver titles to spine, in original jacket designed by Richard Chopping, priced at 16s. Not to be confused with the vast majority of copies bound in dark grey or brown. A near fine copy of the book with a couple of faint tape ghost marks to endpapers, in a lightly used and slightly toned jacket. Bookplate of bibliographer Jon Gilbert to free endpaper. Housed in an elegant clamshell box. This is the rare variant binding in the publisher's black cloth (the majority all are in dark grey or dark brown, sometimes misdescribed as black); "few firsts were bound in black" (from The Bibliography, p.360). Cloth-backed blue paper-covered boards, decorated in gilt to the spine, ochre top edge and endpapers, illustrated jacket priced at $4.50. Contents clean, no inscriptions, jacket is used, with some spots to spine, large chip at crown (although presentable in a paper-backed sleeve), sunned to cloth beneath at area of loss. Very good.
