About this Item
First edition. 145 pages + 1 of ads. Formerly the property of Appledore Women's Institute and stamped as such to the pastedowns, with the front endpaper neatly removed. The book is reasonably firmly bound in the publisher's red cloth, lettered and illustrated in black and yellow, the boards are quite marked and rubbed and the extremities are bumped. The text block is slightly age toned, marked and dusty, with some minor spots of foxing, dog-eared page corners and occasional pencil underlining or annotation, also a neatly written ink ownership inscription to the half-title, it is slightly cracked at points. An early short novel by the future militant suffragette, satirising the schoolgirl fiction genre and patriarchal conventions of the late-Victorian period. The first edition is reasonably well represented in institutional holdings but quite rare in commerce. Seller Inventory # 6516
