Judge Jeremie was appointed Attorney-General in Mauritius and arrived from England in 1832 to announce abolition without indemnity to a hostile reception of sugar planters and slave owners. Slavery was finally abolished in 1835 but not before the owners received £2,000,000 compensation from the British. After accusing Mauritian judges of involvement in slavery, Sir John Jeremie was honoured in 1836 by the Anti-Slavery Society.
