First edition. 2 volumes, titles, half-titles, 2-page publisher's advertisements bound at the end of Vol. I, 4-page publisher’s advertisements bound at the end of Vol. II, 8vo (12.5cm*19cm), finely bound in contemporary tooled calf, fillet border to boards, spine with lettering and decorations in gilt between raised bands, top edges gilt, dentelles, purple endpapers, original blue cloth bound in to rear. Published by Smith, Elder & Co. (London), 1886. A touch of wear to the bindings, repaired tears to a few page edges, the occasional minor blemish; a very good set. The Mayor of Casterbridge was initially published in weekly instalments in the Graphic from January to May 1886. Several amendments were made to the plot before being published in book form on 10 May 1886 in a print run of 750 copies, of which only 650 of which were bound. (Purdy, p.50-54; Sadleir 1111.)
