Description:
First edition in English of this comprehensive guide by one of the leading names in microscopy. A specialist in diatoms, in 1889 he designed the renowned Van Heurck microscope for W. Watson and Sons. This translation, by Wynne E. Baxter (1844-1920), is from the 1891 fourth edition and is augmented with new material by Van Heurck (1839-1909). The first edition was published in 1865 in French. Large octavo. Mounted photogravure portrait frontispiece of author with tissue guard, 2 plates, numerous illustrations within text. Original green cloth over bevelled boards, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, front cover stamped with gilt microscope and framed in gilt, rear cover framed in blind, dark brown coated endpapers, top edge gilt. Gilt bright, hint of wear to spine ends and corners, inner hinges split but holding, foxing to frontispiece, cords occasionally visible, a handful of scientific annotations in pencil: a very good copy.
