Contemporary full polished brown calf, sides ruled with two gilt fillets, spines with raised bands, richly gilt-decorated compartments, and two green morocco labels, vivid bright blue marbled endpapers and marbled edges. 4 engraved title-pages (browned), one to each volume. Ex libris B. Jones Bateman of Pentr Mawr with his armorial bookplate to front pastedowns, with an addition presentation to him on his leaving Eton in 1846. Some light spotting to titles, contents otherwise clean and fresh, some light scuffs to boards, generally a very good set in handsome contemporary bindings. The first collected works of Smith incorporating new material including the lesser known pieces. In the amusing advertisment Pryor quotes Montesquieu to the effect that " There is a pleasure arising from the perusal of the very bagatelles of men renowned for their knowledge and genius; and we receive with veneration those pieces after they are dead, which would lessen them in our estimation while living." Prior's chief works were biographies. His Memoir of the Life and Character of Edmund Burke (1824) ran to several editions and was quite well regarded. His Life of Oliver Goldsmith (2 vols., 1837) and his Miscellaneous Works of Goldsmith (4 vols., 1837) were assiduously compiled. When John Forster (1812 1876) brought out The Life and Adventures of Oliver Goldsmith (1848) he was accused by Prior of wholesale plagiarism, an accusation which Forster consistently denied. Washington Irving, in his Life of Goldsmith (1849), admitted his obligations to 'the indefatigable Prior', who none the less denounced him in Goldsmith's Statue (ODNB). Seller Inventory # 62214
