About this Item
A pleasing collection of this informative monthly periodical, each issue collecting missionary news and discussion from around the world, either submitted directly to the editors or reprinted from other sources. The contents reflect the Western preoccupation with China, India, and other Asia countries as a source of millions of converts. Articles, some illustrated with engravings, cover the appointment of new missionaries, donations received by prominent patrons (for example, the King of Prussia), and news from the field. Contributors include Walter Henry Medhurst, whose news of the recruitment of a colporteur in Shanghai is covered on the front page of the May 1848 issue. Volume III (1847-8) carries a multi-part series on the religions of China, taken from the Foreign Missionary Chronicle. 60 numbers bound in 1, quarto (315 x 235 mm). Illustrations in text. Recent brown quarter sheep, black labels, incorporating older marbled boards, brown sheep corners, and endpapers. Corners worn, foxing internally, leaves with some short closed tears as expected, 105 mm closed tear to first leaf of Vol. I, No. 8, final leaf of Vol. I, No. 5 trimmed into banner title (main text unaffected): a very good collection of fragile material.
