Folio. Large bound volume of the North-China Herald from 1st October to 31st December 1919. Bound in brown cloth library binding, black lettering to the spine. pp xii, 876. Ex-libris Yale University with the university bookplate to the front paste-down and withdrawal stamp to the free endpaper. The first section contains a vey useful index of contents of this volume. Includes leading articles, commentary, politics, reports from outposts, book reviews, the courts, etc and covers such topics as boycotts, aviation, shipping (including the shipping strike in Hong Kong), trade, local club activities, etc, etc. A wealth of information on life and activities in Shanghai among the foreign community in 1919. The North-China Herald was a weekly publication, every Saturday, and was published alongside the North-China Daily News. First published in August 1850 it quickly became the most influential and important English language news source in China and continued until December 1941 when it was suspended and never recommenced after the war. Binding is tight, pages heavily browned and fragile but this is certainly readable, water staining to the covers. Good condition only. A rare survivor and fascinating document.
