Original green pictorial cloth, title stamped in gold gilt on the front cover and spine, 461 pp., preface, frontispiece (portrait), plates, numerous illustrations, many from old photographs, plus eight illustrations by C.M. Russell. Vaughn left Illinois in 1864 for the gold fields of Idaho. Later that year he moved to the gold fields of Montana. He relates his experiences and some early history of the state. It describes the first decade of the author's stay there, beginning right after the Civil War and continuing up to the Nez Perce War of 1877. Much on cattle, Indian fighting, buffalo hunting, Custer and the Little Big Horn, pioneers, ranching, the Nez Perce War, the Ghost Dance, etc. An important first-hand account of early Montana history. Ranked by Harry Fritz as one of the top 100 books on Montana. A very fine, bright, tight copy. An exceptional copy and seldom found in this splendid condition. Has become quite scarce.
