Small 4to. Hardcover. Pp. 296. First Edition. Very good condition. Tree-calf leather binding, with a recent spine, professionally done. Gilt border on cover and gilt label on spine. Includes book plate from Private Collection on front end-paper. The cover has slight shelf-wear, with corners noticeably bumped. Almost all pages are clean and unmarked, with faint foxing. Complete with 9 plates. Small holes in the first few pages, not obstructing any text or image. Faint staining on the back of the title page. The only major fault regards a large section of the dedication page, which is missing, apparently without loss of text; it has been repaired by an amateur hand; at its back, a curious illustration from a 1792 magazine has been tipped in. Alexander Dirom was a British military commander who saw overseas service in Barbados, Jamaica and India. He is remembered not only as a military commander but also as an agricultural improver, which earned him Fellowship of both the Royal Society of London and the Royal Society of Edinburgh. His most notable contribution was to identify the importance of salt in animal diets, leading to the widespread use of "salt-licks" from around 1800. His views on the British corn trade also paved the way to the formulation of the Corn Laws in the early 19th century. Seller Inventory # 036378
