About this Item

Description:

Laminated illustrated wrappers, 4to, 27 cm, [96] pp, colour ills. 210 lots. From the introduction by Hugo Vickers: "The Neo-Romantics were a group of artists whose lives and art were intimately connected. .They had a positive identity as long ago as February 1926 when the Berman brothers, Berard, Tchelitchew and Kristians Tonny took part in a group exhibition at the Galerie Druet in Paris. Tchelitchew's old friend, the critic Waldemar George dubbed them the 'Neo-Romantics' and the group was explored by James Thrall Sobv in his book 'After Picasso' (1936). The Neo-Romantics drew inspiration from Picasso s 'Blue' and 'Pink' periods and the metaphysical painting of de Chirico. Reacting against the abstraction and formalism of Cubism, they sought to re-establish the human figure as the central feature of their work: they depicted man as an emotional figure (not a classical or abstract nude figure) and placed him in the centre of his environment or landscape. An enigmatic group of artists at the fringe of Surrealism, their work has always been hard to define. Between the 1930s and the 1950s their best paintings were bought by the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and by many highly cultured, private collectors, including Gertrude Stein, James Thrall Soby. Edward James and the Noailles." Small tear to spine, rear wrapper a little creased, otherwise Good. List of prices realized laid in. Seller Inventory # ABE-62355
