Sir Astley Cooper (1768-1841) was a pre-eminent London surgeon, professor of comparative anatomy at the Royal College of Surgeons from 1813-1815, vice-president of the Royal Society, a member of the court of examiners of the college in 1822, and he served as president twice, in 1827 and 1836. In the preface, Cooper notes that he had discovered a mode of injecting the testis which enables it to be more easily dissected and demonstrated and its minute structure developed and preserved . He also states I feel great regret at the price of this Work; but it arises from the number of plates. He who understands the expense of printing, of drawings, of engravings, and of colouring, will at once discover that my object in publishing is not pecuniary advantage . In his published works, he paid particular attention to high-quality illustrations, drawn by a succession of artists that he himself employed. . This work is illustrated with fine hand-coloured lithographic plates by the British brothers, William Fairland (1800- ) and Thomas Fairland (1804-1852). ODNB; Garrison & Morton, 4166.
