First edition, first impression; large 8vo (220 x 145 mm.); colour frontispiece and 6 plates by Dmitri Mitrokhin, patterned endpapers, contemporary gift inscription in ink to half-title; publisher's cloth stamped with red & yellow pattern to upper cover, lettered in black, corners bumped, a very good copy. A very good example of this collection of Russian folk-tales. Arthur Ransome is today of course best remembered for his children's books series commencing with Swallows and Amazons (1930). He did however have a close connection with Russia, having fled there to escape a failing marriage, nominally to study Russian fairy tales. Whilst this book is certainly evidence that Ransome did undertake such studies, he did also invest quite some time getting to know the Bolsheviks, becoming one of the few English journalists allowed access to their party leaders, his resultant journalism and pro-Bolshevik pamphlets almost seeing him tried for treason.
