Hand coloured engraved panorama. 2500 x 300mm. Rolled onto a wooden spindle with typographical key tipped in at the spindle end, closed tear at margin. Integral red cloth cover with gilt pictorial titles, ads to verso. Chips to edges with an area of old brown paper restoration to verso, some cracking and minor separation where sheets join, chips to cloth and a little dampstaining to ad. Good only. London, Illustrated London News,  An attractive panoramic elevation spanning Vauxhall Bridge in the west to Greenwich in the east, following the path of the river Thames. Many landmark buildings and churches are depicted on both sides of the river, with the perspective point looking down from above south London. Seven major bridges are shown, the map predating the construction of Tower Bridge in the east. The density of vessels in the waterway, especially east of London Bridge, is indicative of the Thames' importance to the flow on London's commerce in the nineteenth century. The eastern portion also features a section of the London and Greenwich Railway, the city's first. The Houses of Parliament, King's College and the Millbank Penitentiary all also make prominent appearances, as do a wealth of other points of interest, all delineated in the key.   Abbey Life, 568.
