First edition. 8vo. 33 pp. Plan; printed slip at the title page "With the Compliments of the Author." Eads (1820-1887) planned and headed the construction of the great bridge across the Mississippi at St. Louis; "hardly had this work been completed (1874) when Eads proposed to Congress to open one of the mouths of the Mississippi River in the Gulf and maintain the channel," (DAB) a task successfully completed in 1879. Thompson 2519. Original printed purple wrappers (with a plain brown over-wrapper); the Franklin Institute copy with its stamps, ink accession numbers and a bookplate, noting "Presented to the F. Institute by J. B. Eads 10/24/76." Very good.
