FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. 252, [4, ads]. Original (remainder-issue?) orange cloth, front board and spine lettered direct in black. Some spotting. A little shaken, somewhat soiled, spine discoloured, cloth splitting at ends of rear joint, front hinge splitting at head of title-page gutter. The first British edition of the sixth Poirot novel, first serialised in Liberty Magazine the previous year (and briefly preceded by the American edition), in an unusual binding, possibly a remainder issue. The usual states - with some disagreement over precedence - are recorded as a reddish-orange finely-woven cloth lettered in black, and a black cloth lettered in gilt, each with lettering reproducing the typography of the title-page. This copy is in a lighter orange cloth and the lettering is plainer in style, suggesting a later, cheaper issue - though not by much, since a second impression was required only two months after this first.
