Sir Peter Hall (1930-2017) was an English opera, theatre, and film director. In 1960, he founded the Royal Shakespeare Company, and later led as artistic director of Glyndebourne Festival Opera. Hall succeeded Olivier as Director of the National Theatre in 1973, personally directing thirty-three productions, many of them landmarks in 20th century theatre. His obituary in The Times called him 'the most important figure in British theatre for half a century'. The Olivier award for best director was renamed the Sir Peter Hall Award for Best Director in 2018.
