Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the internal structure and temperature of the Earth, drawing on disciplines ranging from geology to physics and mathematics. The author presents detailed observations and theoretical models to explore the Earth's composition and evolution. They propose a mathematical model to probe the Earth's interior, examining the implications of different temperature distributions and material properties. The book discusses evidence for a fluid layer beneath a solid crust and considers the role of compression and volcanism in shaping the Earth's surface. Through rigorous analysis, the author sheds light on the Earth's history, its internal dynamics, and the forces that have molded its present-day form. The insights presented in this book contribute significantly to our understanding of our planet's structure and the processes that have shaped it over billions of years. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Second Edition,. second edition, altered and enlarged, blue cloth, spine gilt lettering faded, text block clean, tight and sound, illustrated, an unread copy, as the pages are mostly uncut. Though the main text is dated 1889, this must be a later binding, as it includes a 60-page appendix containing three further chapters dated 1891, two dealing with criticisms aired when the book first appeared, the other giving an account of later experimentation. This is the first textbook on geophysics. Fisher was the second person to put forward the theory of continental drift (plate tectonics), following Von Humboldt's speculations almost a century earlier. Fisher argued on a more scientific basis but his fate, like all others who argued the case until the 1960s, was to be either ridiculed or ignored. Less scientifically, he speculated that the Moon was formed from material knocked out of the Pacific Ocean. Very scarce. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Seller Inventory # 22535

Condition: Very good. Octavo: xiv, 299pp., text diagrams. Very good, almost fine, copy in publisher's cloth. The scarce first edition of the first geophysics textbook, and one of the most important early proposals of continental drift. Fisher postulates a non-homogenoeus composition of the earth and a mechanism of plate tectonics ascribed to convection currents in the earth's molten interior. These postulates were all based on careful scientific deductions rather than simple speculation. This work went largely unnoticed or ridiculed until the work of Alfred Wegener.
