First Anning Bell edition, with a pressed rose leaf from Keats's grave mounted on the half-title, inscribed below, "From the grave of Keats, Rome, March 24, 1897. T.F.B." The flower is accompanied by a handwritten note, transcribing the acrostic verse which General Eyre added to Keats's memorial in 1875. The note, on the letterhead of Thomas Coleman du Pont (1863-1930), later president of the family company, concludes: "Taken from memorial at the grave of Keats, March 24, 1897". He gave the note and the rose leaf to Thomas Francis Bayard Jr (1868-1942), a Delaware lawyer who married into du Pont's family and who later defeated him in a race for the US Senate in 1922. Bayard's ownership inscription is on the contents page, dated October 1897. The illustrator, Robert Anning Bell (1863-1933), was an early member of the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society and was often featured in the arts magazine, The Studio. Noting the difficulty of illustrating Keats, The Studio reviewed Bell's edition as "in every respect satisfactory from cover to cover". Bell's art was later included in the exhibition "The Last Romantics" at the Barbican Art Gallery in 1989. The Studio, vol. 12, 1898, p. 203. Octavo. Tissue-guarded frontispiece and title page with decorative column borders printed in red, illustrations in text (18 full-page, 3 double-page and printed in red and black), all after drawings by Anning Bell. Original cream cloth designed by Anning Bell, spine and front cover lettered and decorated with vines and grapes in gilt, red, and green, publisher's device to rear cover in red and green, patterned endpapers incorporating author's monogram, top edge gilt, fore and bottom edges uncut. Two old stickers on rear pastedown. Spine and cloth edges toned, spine ends mildly worn, small tear to lower corner of front free endpaper, edges and outer leaves foxed. A very good copy.…
