Two volumes octavo beautifully bound in period full red crushed morocco by Grieve;flatback spines with lovely gilt thistle and rose motifs; boards with triple gilt fillets and floral gilt corners; fine inner dentelles gilt; marbled endpapers top edges gilt; attractive private bookplate on front paste-downs. There is a little light rubbing but this an outstanding example of the binder's art. xi and xii of Volume 1 are a little frayed at the fore-edge but this is no where near the text.xiv, (2), 325, vi, (2), 498pp. Together with: " The Poems Of William Dunbar First Collected And Published In 1834. Supplement , William Paterson Edinburgh 1866. Not To The Binder - This Supplement To Be Added To The first Volume. " (iv), 261-325. Illustrated and in original wrappers. William Dunbar (1459 or 1460-d. by 1530) was Makar to the court of King James IV (who fell at Flodden Field in 1513 with the Flowers of Scotland). Dunbar wrote a large body of work in Scots of diverse subjects and literary styles. Several of his poems were included in the Chapman and Myllar Prints of 1508, the first books to be printed in Scotland. David Laing (1793-1879) was a distinguished antiquary, bookseller, and Librarian to the Signet Library from 1837 until his death. This is the first scholarly edition of Dunbar's works.
