First edition, first printing, with multiple official signatures and inscriptions by contemporary members of the Accra police force. This guide is rare, with no institutional copies traced. Major Alexander Wentworth Kitson (1862-1938) was the Gold Coast's first Commissioner of Police between 1893-1910. The present work, compiled towards the close of his career, suited the British vision of a modern colonial police force efficiently governed by rules and regulations. The contents addresses all aspects of contemporary policing including escorting prisoners, weights and measures, spirit licenses, uniforms, parades, and police department finances. The inscriptions in this copy include: "Pay Clerk - Date of Issue 18/9/09"; "Property of Police Accra 22.8.11"; "This book is not to be taken out of the Guard Room A.C.S.S. 7.3.13"; "Assua Chief of Aandua of the Nachin/Linguist Kangah, C2 messanger Addoo Kofie"; and "E Townsende Sapping 8/8/19" (twice). Revisions to the regulations concerning police escorts of specie have been painstakingly recorded by a contemporary hand in the margins of the relevant section. Octavo. Tables in text. A well-handled copy with the binding worn and stained, occasional marks internally, nicks to fore edge of p. 15, and small red ink marks to foot of pp. 92-5.
