Item description from seller

First edition of the author's forestry manual, which includes Sir Henry Stuart's account "of giving immediate effect to wood". Thomas Cruickshank's work examines the cultivation, management, and properties of various types of trees native to the British Isles. Cruickshank describes himself as a "Forester at Careston", a small hamlet on the eastern coast of Scotland. He dedicates the work to James Duff, 4th Earl Fife (1776-1857), and notes that his text was "The result of experience chiefly acquired in his Lordship's service" (p. iii). Octavo. Tables, diagrams, and illustrations in the text. Original grey boards, spine with printed green paper label, edges uncut. Signature and stamp of one William Parker to front pastedown. Light bumping and rubbing, slight loss at foot of spine, short splits at joint ends and head of spine, faint browning to endpapers, minor foxing to endpapers, edges, and outer leaves: a very good copy.
