Original cloth-backed boards, uncut, new spine, book-plate and signature of WILLIAM EDMUND IMAGE [FRCS], later library stamps on front free end-paper and first four leaves, a very good copy. *GARRISON-MORTON #2162 for the first edition of 1818, 'A valuable surgical record of the Napoleonic period'. The second edition only, of 1820, was issued with 6 plates. See PREFACE above : '. the plates, which added to the expense of the second edition, without conferring any practical benefit, have in this been cancelled, and in lieu of them a short Biographical Sketch of the Author has been prefixed, which, I think, may prove generally interesting.' WILLIAM EDMUND IMAGE FRCS DL JP (18 May 1807 26 September 1903) surgeon and early philatelist, born in Norwich, the younger son of the Rev. Thomas Image, Rector and Patron of Whepstead, Suffolk and a notable geologist. He took his medical degree in France where he lived in the house of the French surgeon M. Dupuytren. On returning to England he established his practice in Bury St. Edmunds, eventually becoming an acknowledged expert in forensic medicine and toxicology. SEE Plarr's Lives. 'William Edmund Image, born in 1807, of French Huguenot extraction, was apprenticed to John Greene Crosse of Norwich, then studied at Guy's Hospital and in Paris, where he graduated Bachelier dès Lettres. At the outbreak of the Revolution in 1830 he returned and settled in practice at Bury St Edmunds, where he was Surgeon to the Hospital and gained a local reputation and general respect. Arsenical poisoning was a matter of wide popular suspicion in East Anglia, and Image was a witness at three trials; at the last in 1849, Katherine Foster was executed at Bury St Edmunds for the murder of her husband.'.
