FIRST EDITION. 3 vols. Half titles. Modern half tan calf over marbled boards, gilt raised bands, red morocco labels. A nice copy. Glover & Greene 393, who record the title as A Private Enquiry. Copac lists copies at BL, Liverpool, Queen Mary, and Strathclyde. OCLC adds three copies in the US at Occidental College, Emory, and University of Texas at Austin. The novel is divided into parts, the first being 'The Amateur Detective', the second 'A White Hand at Work', the third 'With the Help of the Police', the fourth 'By Accident', and the fifth 'The Struggle at Last'. Charles Henry Ross, 1835-1897, was a writer and cartoonist best remembered for creating the character Ally Sloper for the magazine Judy; he wrote six novels including this one.
