First separate editions, offprints from the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, of Morgan's four works on life assurances, here bound together. Morgan (1750-1833) was a pioneer of life assurance, working all his life as actuary to the Equitable Assurance Society. His work became a model for actuaries, combining mathematical skills with management, setting the profession on a mathematical footing, and making the Equitable Assurance Society the largest and most well founded company of its type in Britain. All four works are rare: ESTC locates two institutional copies of the first work (Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Germany, Columbia University in the US), and only one of the second, third, and fourth (each in Columbia). Contemporary half calf and marbled boards, rebacked, light blue speckled edges. With a few instances of contemporary annotations, chiefly detailed calculations. Light wear at extremities else binding firm, light toning from type and minor foxing, otherwise fresh and with generous margins. In very good condition.
