The Fortune Press made most of its money through a steady output of pornography, and also provided its owner, Reginald Caton, with a convenient tax dodge for his activities as a slum landlord in Brighton. Caton would occasionally commission works of "proper literature" to provide his pornography list with a veneer of respectability (Bradford, The Odd Couple, Ch. 3). Scarce in this condition. Not in Fraser & Thomas. Octavo. Woodcut title-page and 8 head- and tailpieces by Rayner Heppenstall. Original black boards, spine lettered in gilt, twin rules to covers in blind, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. With dust jacket. Tanning to endpapers as usual. An excellent copy in the spine-toned dust jacket.
