The book is reasonably firmly bound in the publisher's blue cloth, lettered in gilt, the cloth is marked, the extremities are bumped and rubbed and the spine is sunned. The text block is age toned, slightly foxed and marked, with cracking at points, a small bookseller's label to the front pastedown, short closed tears with associated creasing to a few page edges and some pencil notes to the rear pastedown. An important early Ransome title and a classic of nautical travel writing, describing a voyage in a small boat, which he had commissioned himself, accompanied by his future wife, the former private secretary to Leon Trotsky, and on old sailor who formed the basis for two characters in the Swallows and Amazons series, Peter Duck and Simon, Jim Woodall's mate aboard the Norfolk Broad Wherry Sir Garnet.
