8v. The original burgundy cloth with bevelled boards is worn and has been repaired along the joints. The corners are bumped and there is tape repair to the gutter between half-title and frontispiece; the first illustration is slightly frayed at the fore-edge and a little spotted. The text is clean and the attractive chromolithographs and large folding map are clean and without tears. xvi, 409pp. Complete with 10 plates and large folding map. The leading endpaper is signed thus " Elliott Wood, Royal Engineers 1870 ". Major-General Sir Elliott Wood (1844-1931) served in the Anglo-Egyptian War of 1882 and fought at Tel-El-Kebir; Sudan Expedition 1884. he later commanded the Royal Engineers in Malta' In 1899 he accompanied Sir Redvers Buller and the 1st Army Corps to the Cape and was Chief Engineer in the Second Anglo-Boer War. The author of this book (1828-1896) served in the Bombay Army after education at Addiscombe. He saw action in India, Aden and Ethiopia. Wilkins was also a most able architect. In the 1868 Expedition he was in command of the Royal Engineers in Napier's army and received high praise from the latter for his " invaluable and important service. ". Seller Inventory # 27453
