Uncut in original publisher's buff paper boards, printed paper lettering-piece to spine. Extremities worn, loss to spine. Pencilled ownership inscription of William St. Clair to FEP, scattered spotting. A collection of parodies by poet and essayist Coventry Patmore's (1823-1896) father, likely intended as a prose version of Horace and James Smith's Rejected Addresses (London, 1812). Of particular interest are imitations of two of the author's close friends, Charles Lamb and William Hazlitt. William St. Clair (1937-2021), British scholar and senior civil servant, notable as the author of The Godwins and the Shelleys, The Biography of a Family (1989) and The Reading Nation in the Romantic Period (2004). Size: 8vo.

Established 2007, Antiquates Ltd is an Antiquarian bookseller with a large, custom built shop in the heart of the Dorset countryside. We sell fine and rare books from our Wareham shop, in catalogues, and via our website (www.antiquates.co.uk). Specialising in early printed books both English and Continental, fine English Literature, and books by, for, and about Women and Children, we nevertheless stock a wide range of works on paper from 1500-present - including modern first editions. Our bias is towards the unusual, the interesting and the important - and always have a good stock of rare books by local authors such as T.E. Lawrence and Thomas Hardy; we are just the place if you're looking for an extra-special gift for a wedding, birthday, anniversary or graduation. (Open Wednesday - Saturday, 10am-4pm)
