About this Item
First edition; 8vo; publisher's green cloth, gilt lettering to spine, original pictorial dust jacket printed in blue, yellow and black designed by John Minton, spine with slight even sunning, extreme edges minutely rubbed, with the rare publisher's wraparound band, presented in yellow cloth slipcase with black morocco label with gilt lettering. With this first novel, Braine was to become part of a group of writers who emerged during the 1950s, dubbed as 'angry young men'. His protagonist, Joe Lampton, the working-class (anti)hero epitomises the post-war anxieties, alienation and disillusionment of a young generation. The dustjacket, printed in blue, yellow and black was designed by the English painter, illustrator and stage designer John Minton. Seller Inventory # 106000
