First edition, first printing. Publisher's original navy cloth with silver titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. A near fine copy, the binding square and firm, bright and fresh, with a little rubbing to the spine tips. The contents, with some mild toning and spotting to the text block edge, are otherwise clean throughout, and without inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the lightly rubbed and toned dustwrapper, which is a little spotted to the rear flap fold, and otherwise without loss, or tears. 'John Fitch's new Latin text of Seneca's play Hercules Furens is based on a collation of the chief manuscripts, including the Paris manuscript T, the importance of which has only recently been recognized. In his introduction, Fitch traces the conflicting classical portrayals of Hercules - a figure embodying altruism and aggrandizement, restraint and wildness - and argues that in the play the untamed side of his nature ultimately turns against him and destroys him' (publisher's blurb).
