Quarto 11 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches- handsomely bound in full period tree calf, some repairs. Fine period marbled endpapers with the bookplate of Sarah Sophia Child (Villiers), Countess of Jersey 1785-1867. First 'Hunter' edition with his notes and plates by John Miller. Fine engraved portrait of Evelyn by Bartolozzi, (viii), 8 page list of subscribers, (xxxvii), 1-649, folding table, 9 pages of index and illustrated with 40 FINE ENGRAVED PLATES, including one folding. Complete. About 8 plates with offset from the text (as often), one early period alteration to the season on page 210- otherwise a very good copy with a respectable provenance. John Evelyn FRS was an English writer, landowner, gardener, courtier and minor government official, who is now best known as a diarist.
