First edition, first printing. Complete in seven volumes. Publisher's original blue cloth with gilt titles to the spine, ruled in gilt to the upper board and spine of volume VII, in dustwrappers. Illustrated with black and white frontispieces in the first six volumes, and black and white tipped-in photographic plates throughout in volumes II and III, five plates in volumes IV-VI and 16 plates in volume VII. With a publisher's errata slip and a 'with the compliments of Winston S. Churchill' slip loosely laid in to volume VII. A better than very good set, the bindings square and firm, the cloth is moderately rubbed to the spine tips and extremities, with a touch of fading to the spine of volume I, and a light mark to the spine and a little bowing to the board ends of volume VI. The lightly toned closed text blocks are somewhat spotted, with the occasional bleed to the extreme top and fore-edges of the margins, and with a tiny mark to the bottom edge of volume I. The contents, with bookplates in volumes I, II, IV and V, light spotting to the endpapers and various foxing spots throughout, are otherwise clean and without inscriptions or stamps. The laid-in cards are slightly toned with a small crease to the lower-left corner of the errata slip. Complete with the rubbed nicked and creased dustwrappers, that variously have light fading to the spines, short closed tears to the edges with associated creasing, and small chips to the spine tips and extremities. Volume II's dustwrapper has moisture stains to the underside of the spine and rear panel that are visible to the printed side, and a small scuff to the rear panel. With light wear to the spines of volumes III and V, and some spotting to volumes IV and VII. Secured with tape to the undersides of volumes I, III and V. Not price-clipped (8s 6d; 12s 6d; 11s 6d; 12s 6d; 12s 6 net; 6/- net, respectively). (Woods A66a; A89; A94; A101; A107; A112; A114).
